The artist
Contemporary Indian artist · Oil, acrylic & airbrush on canvas
Milind Shimpi is a contemporary Indian artist working in the classical realist tradition of Indian painting — every canvas oil or acrylic, laid down slowly, layer by layered patience.
His canvases move between many worlds: the devotional — gods met face to face, in colour and in light; the historical — the Maratha past rendered with a portraitist's gravity; the everyday — the village path at dusk, water carried home; and the horse, painted in all its speed and nobility.
He is equally known for the airbrush — a medium rare in fine art — and for the decades of workshops and demonstrations through which he taught it, in schools, colleges, academies and organisations across Maharashtra.
The work is built slowly — time that remains visible in the surface, in the depth of the darks and the deliberation of every detail.
Three decades of exhibitions — from the galleries of Pune to Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai, and Artline, Dubai — and a body of work held in private collections, corporate offices, resorts and hotels across India and abroad.
Philosophy
I
A painting begins in looking — long, unhurried looking — and the canvas keeps a record of exactly how long the painter stayed.
II
Paint rewards those who wait. Layer over layer, the slow work of the hand does what no hurry can imitate.
III
For the gods, for history, for the ordinary day: each subject is met on its own terms, and painted as if it mattered — because it does.
The practice
Airbrush spray painting is seldom practised as fine art — it demands a command of control and patience that few bring to the surface. Milind built a language in it, and then spent decades teaching it.
·
His signature medium — colour delivered in fine, precise mist, layered until it holds depth, blended in transitions no brush can make.
·
Decades of demonstrations in schools, colleges, academies and organisations — with his institute of art carrying the work forward.
·
Author of a book on airbrush spray painting, published in 2015 at Balgandharva Kaladalan, Pune — a rare print record of the medium.
